May 5th Meeting Summary

The following is a summary of the highlights from our last Town Council meeting.

We passed an increase to our fees for plenary retail businesses. The new fee will be $2,239.

We had to table the introduction of an attendance policy for boards and committee because the Council did not receive an updated copy of the proposed ordinance.

We submitted a grant for $1.5 million for our upcoming Bloomfield Avenue Streetscape Improvement Project. We approved contracts for Miracle Chemical Company, OverDrive, and Suburban Sports Group.

Two resolutions that we passed related to state matters. The first was a resolution that we passed, again, to encourage the state legislature to restore energy tax receipts to NJ municipalities. The State has withheld over a $1 million in funds for Verona over the last two decades by diverting energy tax receipts into the state budget.

The second resolution passed encouraged the state legislature to pass two bills to encourage the County to develop a plan to reduce food waste, and to waive certain EPA requirements so that we can more easily set up a municipal composting facility.

In new business we discussed meeting dates for July through January 2025.

We also went into closed session.

If you have any comments on matters before the Council, I encourage you to send us all your feedback by going to https://www.veronanj.org/councilcontactform.
